Donner Lake Community Focus

To wrap up our marathon tour of Lake Tahoe and Truckee communities, we’re ending on a high note with one of our favorite hidden gems, the “Jewel” of Truckee...Donner Lake! This area just west of Truckee offers beautiful views of a high elevation lake with an infamous history, and a family-oriented community lifestyle. The shores of Donner Lake are touched by snowmelt from the surrounding peaks, and its public piers invite summer-long sunbathers, paddleboarders, and yoga classes. Living at a higher elevation the powder totals higher here, and the relative remoteness offers additional privacy for those seeking a snowed-in getaway.

One of the best perks of living at Donner Lake is the size of the community, with many living within walking distance of the water. Nature seekers and history lovers are drawn to the area, but without the occasionally overwhelming traffic that Tahoe bordered by Donner Summit to the west and a state park to the east. Up Old Highway 40 are the Historic China Wall and Rainbow Bridge.

Donner Lake homes run the gamut, ranging from smaller condos to classic mountain cabins, all the way up to large, luxurious lakefront homes with million-dollar views. The primary bank of homes sit above the lake’s north shore in a large swath of forest that shields them from I-80’s descent into Truckee. True lake cottage homes line Donner Pass Road, interspersed with many new, glass-fronted homes suited for views of the craggy Donner Summit and its namesake aquatic counterpart. The south shore is a testament to exemplary residential architecture and bonafide mountain lake living. Expect a wide range of home prices, and several homeowner associations offer private beaches and docks for their properties.

Donner Lake offers beautiful views and a bounty of activities, it’s easy for everyone to find something to enjoy.  Summer recreation options include kayaking, boating, and waterskiing on the lake itself. Numerous public and private beaches make for great sunbathing and splashing. You’ll have quick access to great hiking and mountain biking trails, and the area west of the lake is a popular spot for rock climbers.

Anyone can make use of the numerous public piers lining the shore, and the east end beaches are accessible via the Donner Memorial State Park. It’s the perfect spot to bring your pups and spend the day picnicking.  A membership at the Donner Lake Property Owners’ Beach Club provides access to a private beach on the west end of the lake. It also includes access to the clubhouse, boat launch, a snack bar, and a playground.
